The black ship
Captain’s gone. Driven away, I think. I saw it happen by accident. Shortly after noon I was resting up thinking about what to put in my next update letter to Maya when I happened to glance out the window and saw another boat coming over the horizon. Though the schooner was smaller than Captain’s boat, it somehow looked more powerful and intimidating. Its jet-black outline blended so seamlessly with the water it swelled its size to monstrous proportions.
Captain came on deck. I didn’t see who he was arguing with. But it was certainly an argument. He was shouting and waving his hands about, and every now and then he looked like he was about to jump aboard the black ship. Then, abruptly, the argument was over and he was sailing away. It was sad to watch him go. I know Armbranch felt it, too. He stayed at the window long after Captain’s boat disappeared.
The black ship is gone, too. I guess it’s time to start thinking about how we might defend ourselves in this place.
