Clew Bay
The sight of that fishing boat triggered a whole host of memories this afternoon, memories of days spent with Maya at Howth harbour, and when we’d tramp the shores of Lough Oughtar with a picnic and a pike rod, and the time we went sea fishing in Clew Bay. Maya caught her first fish there –a three-pound spiny dogfish. And I can still hear her cries of shocked delight as it flopped about on the deck of the boat. She didn’t touch it. All she kept insisting on was that we toss it back quickly before it died.
I think she’d love it on this boat. I’ve spent the past two hours telling her all about the Empty Sea and how full of mystery it is. Armbranch stayed up top all evening. He’s good like that, always seems to sense when I want to be alone.
